Lewis William Duncombe 1904 -1980

Lewis was my grandfather. He was born on 19 July 1904 in Llanfyllin, Wales where his father was working as a farm bailiff. The family moved about quite a lot and in 1910 they had moved to Hindlip, Worcestershire and in 1916 they were living in Tissington, Ashburne. It is here that Lewis and his brother Reginald attended Queen Elizabeths Grammar School.

Lewis attended the school from 1916 - 1922

.By 1930 he had moved out of the family home and was living in Bicester at 53 Priory Road where he was in lodgings and working as a solicitors clerk.

It was in Bicester that he met my grandmother Evelyn. In 1930 they became engaged and married a year later on 14 March 1931 at Bicester Methodist Church.

In 1933 their first son Rodney was born followed in 1935 by Nigel. Lewis worked at Bicester Town Hall and by 1957 they had moved to Suffolk where Lewis worked as a local government finance officer .

The lived in a small village called Barnby about 4 miles from Lowestoft. It is a place I remember well as we spent many family holidays there and for a few months when I was about 8 we lived there too. My grandparents were well respected in the local community, Lewis was a church warden and Evelyn was very prominent in the W.I.

BungalowAfter Lewis retired they moved into a Bungalow which they had had built in Barnby. In July 1979 Evelyn suffered a fatal stroke. She was cremated and her ashes were buried in the churchyard of St Botolph's, at North Cove. Lewis was lost without his soul mate and when he became ill the following year he had no fight left in him and died on 27 February 1980. His ashes are buried alongside his wifes.
